Welcome to Coolangatta one of the Gold Coast’s most laid back beachside suburbs. Coolangatta lies almost on the outskirts of the Gold Coast. Coolangatta makes a perfect venue for a holiday getaway. The liveliness and energy of this beautiful picturesque location is much sort after by holiday makers every year it is very coastal, cosmopolitan and hip town that is full of vibe of fun.
Coolangatta, at its bordering location Rainbow Bay extend to the next town of Tweed Heads. It lies at an estimated distance of 100 kilometres to the south of Brisbane and around 900 kilometres to the north of Sydney. It is considered as the main gateway to the Gold Coast and to the Northern New South Wales since it lies directly on the border of the Gold Coast. The coastal town is actually pretty small and is only home to an equally small population of just around 4,800 residents.
Coolangatta was discovered by Captain James Cook back in 1770, at the same time when he noted the danger that the Gold Coast posed to ships navigating near the area. The area was thus named Point Danger, a name assigned also by Captain Cook. True enough. The small town’s name was taken from an 83-feet schooner that found its end in the area in the year 1846.
In 1903, Coolangatta was developed as a holiday destination due to the sudden boost in the number of guesthouses and accommodation offers. During this time, a commercial centre was also created in the town, which largely contributed to the continuous ascent of this coastal town to the hall of fame when it comes to holiday destinations.
Coolangatta tourism is definitely alive, what with a portion of the Gold Coast Airport located in Coolangatta. A portion only, since some part of the airport runway extends all the way to New South Wales. The airport used to be called Coolangatta Airport, which is, was up until now, a testament to the healthy tourism industry on the Gold Coast.
If possible, schedule a trip or holiday to Coolangatta in June, when this exciting coastal town comes alive to a Rock and Roll street bonanza with the annual Wintersun Festival. This major festival lasts for two weeks and pays homage to the town’s fifties and sixties era. During the Wintersun Festival, tourists can enjoy attractions and sights ranging from exhibits of restored items, mostly cars, as well as revival bands that play popular music of the past.
But if you can’t visit in June, Coolangatta offers still more attractions you can enjoy sans festival. Coolangatta is a nice driving distance of less than 30 minutes away from some of the most famous theme parks in Australia. For one thing, families with children should make the most out of the trip by dropping by at the Dreamworld, Australia’s most popular theme and amusement park.
